Given the huge contribution made by Southern Africa with regard to the World of Golf, and in order to safeguard the past history of golf in Southern Africa (including the politically difficult periods in our history), and make it accessible to present and future generations whilst also recognizing those who have made a significant contribution to the game, The Southern Africa Golf Hall of Fame was launched on Wednesday 23 December 2009 and comprises:

  • Museum including the Golf Hall of Fame
  • Annual Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner
  • Annual Golf Hall of Fame Charity tournament
  • Annual Golf Hall of Fame publication

The Sid Brews Golf Development Trust has registered the Southern Africa Golf Hall of Fame project to utilize the opportunity to raise funds for charitable purposes and the development of golf in Southern Africa. The trustees of the Hall of Fame include SAGA and the WGSA.

Congratulations to Louis Oosthuizen for becoming the fifth Southern African to win The Open Championship, following Bobby Locke (1949, 1950, 1952 and 1957); Gary Player (1959, 1968 and 1974); Nick Price (1994) and Ernie Els (2002), as well as only the eight Southern African to win a major.

The 2nd Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Induction Dinner, is scheduled for early December 2011. The Museum should be operational by September 2010.

The Museum inclusive of the Hall of Fame and outside championship putting green will be located within a 523 square metre area within the new 100-room hotel & shopping complex which will be open to the public at the Oubaai Golf Estate (near George - Garden Route).

The fixtures have been completed and we anticipate the Museum opening September 2010.

Endorsements

The project has been endorsed by most golfing personality and organisation with whom we have been in contact - whilst they have either given formal approval, or offered assistance.

All our inductees have offered to provide memorabilia for their lockers, whilst Gary Player has indicated the possibility of displaying his recent exhibition seen at the World Golf Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, Mark McNulty and Harold Henning (late) have already donated memorabilia. The bulk of the Museum will consist of the Peter Sauerman collection.

Further endorsements have been received from the PGA Sunshine Tour, SAGA, PGA, WPGA, WGSA, Senior Golfers, Eden Municipality and George Municipality.

Entry Fees & Membership

The entry fee is R50 per adult and R25 per child. Entry fee inclusive of free use of the Golf Simulator and admission to the Championship Putting course where visitors may test their skill on a speedy turning green with all the relevant championship sound effects.

Membership is also offered in order to support the museum operation and programs - includes free membership and entry for 1 year - newsletters, invitations to special events, reduced green fees, golf holiday specials and each member is also honoured with a commemorative brick along this same walk of Champions where you can pay tribute to a family member, your favourite golfer, or immortalize your own special message - R1,350 which is tax deductible.

Visitors can also be a part of history and have their name placed near the Golf Hall of Fame members on the prestigious Walk of Champions by purchasing a brick for R1,000 which is tax deductible.
